New Season, New Space: A Spring Cleaning + Organization Guide
As the days get longer and the flowers begin to bloom, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with a little spring cleaning and organization. At Hannah Goetz Organizing (HGO), we believe that a well-organized, beautiful space can do wonders for your mental clarity and overall wellbeing. Whether you're looking to organize, redesign, or simply give your home a new vibe, we’ve got you covered with our expert tips to help you get your space spring ready!
Start with a Plan
Spring cleaning can feel overwhelming if you don’t break it down into manageable steps. Instead of diving in head-first, make a list of areas that need attention—rooms, specific zones (like closets, drawers, or the kitchen), and items that require attention (like dusty shelves or out-of-season clothing). Once you've mapped it out, you’ll feel more in control and motivated to tackle each task one by one.
Declutter First, Clean Second
A successful spring cleaning session starts with decluttering. It's impossible to clean effectively if your space is packed with too many items. Start by sorting through your belongings and asking yourself if you’ve used them in the past year. Items can be donated, recycled, tossed, or you can have a garage sale!
Organize by Zone
When organizing your home, it’s helpful to divide your space into distinct zones. These zones can be based on function (i.e., kitchen, bathroom, living room) or even by category (clothes, books, toys). Once you’ve decluttered, it’s much easier to group similar items together for organization, making everything more accessible and easier to maintain.
For example:
Kitchen: Organize pantry items by type (spices, grains, canned goods), and make sure all utensils and appliances have their designated spots.
Closets: Invest in space-saving solutions like baskets, hooks, or dividers for easy access and organization.
Bathroom: Utilize drawer organizers, shelving, and baskets to keep toiletries tidy and accessible.
Garage: If you bike every day, designate a spot by the garage door for easy access. Check out before and after pictures below from one of our garage organization projects!
Tackle one zone per day, week, or even month! This helps make organizing less overwhelming, and you don’t feel the need to complete everything at once.
Embrace Storage Solutions
Maximize your home’s storage potential with smart storage solutions. From floating shelves in the living room to pull-out cabinets in the kitchen, there are endless ways to optimize your space. This is also a great time to rethink how you store seasonal items like winter coats or holiday decorations. Labeling storage bins or using under-bed storage can help you keep your home organized year-round.
If your home lacks closet space, consider using multi-functional furniture—like ottomans with hidden compartments or beds with built-in storage—so that everything has a designated home.
Freshen Up Your Decor
Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing surfaces; it’s also the perfect time to give your home a fresh look. Swap out heavy winter textiles like throw blankets and pillows for lighter, brighter options. Introduce pastel-colored accents or floral patterns to reflect the cheerful energy of the season. Fresh flowers, new art pieces, or a seasonal wreath can also instantly elevate your home’s vibe.
Maintain Your Space
Once you’ve completed your spring cleaning and organization, it’s important to keep the momentum going. Set aside a few minutes each day or week to tidy up and stay on top of organization (and remember your zones!). It’s much easier to maintain a clean and organized space when you do a little at a time versus trying to do it all at once. One of our rules we go by is that everything has a home!
